What 1st Graders Are Tested On

The Iowa Assessments at the 1st grade level (Level 7) mark the beginning of formal academic testing. While many sections are still read aloud by the teacher, students start transitioning toward independent work. The test measures foundational skills that form the building blocks for all future learning.

Reading: First graders are assessed on word analysis skills, including phonics, sight words, and basic decoding. Students work with short passages and use picture clues to support comprehension. The focus is on building confidence with printed text.

Language: This section tests basic grammar concepts such as capitalization rules (first word in a sentence, proper nouns), end punctuation (periods, question marks, exclamation points), and recognizing nouns and verbs. Students identify correctly written sentences from multiple choices.

Mathematics: 1st grade math covers numbers up to 100, addition and subtraction within 20, skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, basic measurement concepts (length, weight), and identifying two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. Word problems are introduced at a simple level.

Listening: Students listen to stories and instructions read aloud, then answer questions that test their ability to follow multi-step directions, recall story details, and understand the sequence of events. This section remains teacher-administered.

Reading Comprehension: Beyond basic reading, comprehension questions ask students to understand short stories, identify the main idea, retell the sequence of events, and make simple predictions. Students begin working with both fiction and nonfiction texts.

Vocabulary: Students demonstrate understanding of word meanings through context clues, synonyms, and matching words to definitions. Vocabulary at this level draws from everyday experiences and common academic language.

Science & Social Studies: These sections introduce basic concepts about the community (neighborhoods, helpers, rules), seasons and weather patterns, living vs. nonliving things, and simple earth science. Questions use pictures and are often read aloud to support young readers.
